It may seem only a few weeks since Santa was here, but now is the time for fluffy bunnies and chicks to make a visit. Along with the chocolate eggs you should be thinking about a few ways to fill up the wine rack to help the holiday period along so here are some suggestions.
South America
Tarquino Sauvignon
Mendoza 2010 £85.50
Tarquino Shiraz/Malbec
Mendoza 2010 £85.50
These two are ideal wines for the boot at the local point to point. Screw tops prevent the usual search for the corkscrew and the wines slip down a treat. The Sauvignon is lively fresh and delicious just as a sauvignon should be. The Shiraz Malbec has intense flavours of black currant fruit leading to a long finish. Ideal with a pork pie!
Sauvignon Blanc
J. Bouchon, Chile 2011 £95.00
Chardonnay
J.Bouchon, Chile 2011 £95.00
The Sauvignon is crisp, vibrant, dry and fruit laden - like a Chilean Sauvignon should be. The Chardonnay has ripe pineapple honey and delicate oak aromas. Fermented in a combination of stainless steel and French oak the palate is fruity and fresh with undertones of caramel.
South Africa
Saam Sauvignon
Paarl 2010 £87.00
Saam Cabernet/Sauvignon
Paarl 2009 £87.00
If you prefer a South African wine for a bit of alfresco, then here are two suitable candidates. The Cabernet has a black berry and plum nose. The intensity of the fruit is carried onto the palate where it fills the mouth with juicy tannins, ripe dark fruit and hints of vanilla. The aftertaste is long and fruity. The Sauvignon has a pale green colour, grassy, herbaceous flavours on the nose with a crisp fresh palate and long finish.
Germany
J l Wolf
Riesling 2010 £103.50
This Riesling is one of the most delightful wines you will have the pleasure of drinking. It floats across the palate and induces joyful sensations on the taste buds. OK you don't fancy a sweet German wine, excellent - then this baby is for you as it bucks the trend.
France
Le Croix Carignan & Merlot
Vin de Pays De L'Herault 2010 £79.50
Made from a cepage of Carignan, and Merlot from vineyards around Beziers, this is a typically soft, spicy and fruity red from this area of France. Carignan is the most interesting red grape in the Languedoc when farmed correctly. This is from relatively low yielding fruit and has the characterstic hedgerow fruit nuances, and racy acidity. The Merlot adds some plumpness in the mid-palate and a sweet fruit finish.
H de l’Hospitalet
Merlot 2010 £106.50
In the heart of La Clape, this estate of 1,000 hectares is committed to sustainable and eco friendly agricultural practices. The property has been credited with being a carbon neutral estate and such attention to detail shows through to the wines.
Chiroubles
Domaine Cheysson 2010 £138.00
From the Beaujolais region of France, Chiroubles is a delightful wine for spring and summer drinking. Chiroubles has a bit more structure than other cru Beaujolais and here the wine has fine gamay fruit flavours and soft, ripe tannins.
Petale de Rose
Chateau Tour L’eveque 2010 £99.00
We still have a small quantity of this excellent 2010 Rose available before we ship the new vintage. The wine still drinks well and the discounted price makes it an absolute bargain. Petale is made by Regine Sumiere from her organic vineyards in Provence.
Muscat de Rivesaltes
Jean Marc Lafage 2009 £62.00 for 6 x 50cl
From the acclaimed Els Pyreneus range, this wine is a blend of Muscat Blanc, Petits Grains and Muscat d'Alexandrie, all of which are hand harvested. This is a sweet wine with aromas and flavours of ripe fruit and gentle floral characters. It is a most delicious dessert wine, being sumptuous yet with a clean, fresh finish.
